Jazz
vocalist-songwriter Marcus Goldhaber recently released the album
“Lovely Way to Spend An Evening”, a delightful compilation that
every track you hear will become an instant favorite. It is truly a
nice feeling when you can play a CD and hear someone sing back to you
with the genuine ounce of sincerity the way Marcus does. His voice is
never rushed; it's light and sweet with great intonation.
Marcus grew up in Buffalo, New York where his mother introduced him to the Great American Songbook when she played standards for the family on the piano. The sequencing on the Cd isn't by chance. In a recent interview Marcus said that it was his intent to create an album that "I would want to sit down and listen to straight through." For that he has grouped the mid-tempo tracks followed by a string of ballads.
The CD is a compilation of songs that Marcus loved as a young guy to those that he has written himself in liked fashion. The results is a seamless and delicate that makes it impossible for you to discern Marcus' compositions from the standard without reading the liner notes.
Marcus
got his start in musical theater; this is probably the reason why he
is so good at adding drama to the way he tells a story through song.
This is more evident on tracks like “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails”
and “Losing Your Appeal”.
“The
CD begins with “As Long As I Am Falling in Love.” It's dreamy,
it's fun yet mellow and this track pretty much sets you up for the
mood you can expect on the rest of the CD. There is a vintage
big-band element to “Somebody in Love”, a charming upswing groove
where Marcus' voice shines.
A
lovely piano provides the entryway to the sway of “Take Me” later
you can hear the calming melodies on “A Lovely Way to Spend An
Evening”.
The
first of six ballads commence with the innocence of “She Knows.”
Marcus then takes his listeners on a picturesque journey to “Old
Cape Cod.” where he sings about enjoying “sand dunes, quaint
villages, lobster stew and a window with an ocean view.”
Other
tracks on the CD include “You're Gonna Hear From Me” “No Moon
At All” and “I Fall in Love too Easily.”
The
CD ends with the slightly upbeat and finger-snapping “Lulu's Back
In Town” and “Losing Your Appeal.”
