The last time keyboardist Bob James collaborated with sax player David Sanborn, they were selling platinum music and earning Grammy Awards for Double Vision. This time around, the two jazz stalwarts are back possibly to repeat success with Quartette Humaine.
The CD pays homage to the late pianist
Dave Brubeck who we lost last year. The new compilation from James and
Sanborn will capture Brubeck’s work particularly when he featured saxophonist
Paul Desmond.
In a recent interview, James admitted
that they never anticipated the magnitude of Double Vision’s success adding
that “ironically, although we've met in the studio doing other people’s
projects, we've never toured, or performed together live as a band. The
exception was a midnight jam session at Tokyo Jazz Festival a few years ago. We
played just a couple of tunes, but it engendered the feeling that a reunion was
way overdue.”
This CD features the duo in a different
light in that they have traded their contemporary jazz feel for more acoustic
laden compositions. Drummer Steve Gadd is present and so to is bassist James Genus
who rounds up the quartet.
The recordings for this compilation
actually began a week after Brubeck’s passing which the musicians describe as “exciting”
and “adventurous”.
Expect to hear tracks like “Sofia”, “Follow
Me”, “Montezuma” and “Genevieve” to name a few.
Here are some places you can see the
