Cecile McLorin Salvant joins Mack Records for new CD

Mack Avenue Records recently announced that they would be adding vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant to their 2013 roster. Cecile who is the winner of the 2010 Theolonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition, would be releasing her CD Woman Child set to hit the stores in the middle of 2013.

Cecile McLorin Salvant’s voice is like a visit from an old friend; there is no doubt that she is viewed as a modern day Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter and Bessie Smith all rolled into one.  At just 23 years old, Cecile can stand head to shoulders with any of the female jazz vocalists today. Her voice packs a powerful punch replete with flawless phrasing,  an incredible  knack for story telling and this  amazing way in which she scats with playful innocence.

Cecile who was born and raised in Miami Florida to French and Haitian parents got her start in music when she learned to play classical piano when she was only five years old.  By the time she was eight she was singing with the Miami Choral Society. She has classical music voice training under from  vocal teacher Edward Walker of the University of Miami.

Cecile took her musical passion to Aix-en-Provence, France back in 2007 where she not only studied law but also classical and baroque voice at the Darius Milhaud Conservatory. She later learned more about the art of improvisation, instrumental and vocal repetoire with teacher Jean-Francois Bonnel.

To date, Cecile has performed with several key jazz musicians including Jacky Terrasson, Sadao Watanabe, Aaron Diehl and more. On her upcoming CD, listeners can expect a series of unique interpretations of both jazz and blues songs. Her fellow label-mates Aaron Diehl and Rodney Whitaker are expected to appear on the CD as well.
